What is a NIPT test?
During pregnancy, small fragments of the placenta’s DNA circulate in your blood. NIPT reads those fragments and checks whether there are too many or too few copies of certain chromosomes. It is a screening test: it tells you whether the risk of a condition is low or high, with a sensitivity above 99 % for trisomy 21. A high-risk result is always followed up with a diagnostic test (chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis) in the public healthcare system, and we help you with the referral.
Unlike the nuchal translucency scan, NIPT does not depend on the baby’s position or the exact gestational age, and it carries no risk of miscarriage. Many parents choose it for reassurance, for a more precise answer after a borderline first-trimester screening, or because they want to know the sex early.
Which NIPT test should I choose?
We use NIPT by Life Genomics, analysed in the laboratory in Gothenburg, Sweden. All six packages include trisomy 21, 18 and 13 and the baby’s sex. The broader packages add sex chromosome conditions, microdeletion syndromes and, in the Pro packages, screening of all 23 chromosome pairs by whole-genome sequencing.

Frequently asked questions
From which week can I take the NIPT test?
From week 10+0. There is no upper limit – the test can be taken at any time later in the pregnancy.
How accurate is NIPT?
For trisomy 21 the sensitivity is above 99 %. NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test: a high-risk result is confirmed with chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis, which we help you arrange. A low-risk result means the condition is very unlikely, but no screening test is 100 %.
Do I need a Danish CPR number or a referral?
No. You book directly with your name, e-mail and phone number. Tourists, exchange students, expats waiting for a CPR number and cross-border patients are all welcome.
How and when do I get the result?
Typically 6–10 working days after the blood test. We phone you and go through the result in English, and the written report is uploaded to your secure online account, where you can download it as a PDF.
Can NIPT tell me the sex of the baby?
Yes. All our packages include the baby’s sex, and you decide whether you want to know. Just tell the midwife at the appointment.
What does the test cost, and how do I pay?
Packages start from 3.000 kr. (Danish kroner). The price includes the consultation, the analysis and the written result. You pay by card at the clinic after the test and receive a receipt for your insurance.
Is NIPT safe for the baby?
Yes. It is an ordinary blood sample from your arm, so there is no risk to the pregnancy – unlike the invasive diagnostic tests.
Good to know before you book
NIPT is a screening test and does not replace the scans offered in your pregnancy care. If you are less than 10 weeks pregnant, book an early pregnancy scan first so we can confirm the gestational age. If you have had a bone-marrow transplant, or the pregnancy is a vanishing twin, tell the midwife – it can affect whether the test can be used.
